Manager Denying PTO? Read This.
Paid time off is part 👏 of 👏 your 👏 compensation 👏 just like your salary, 401k match, healthcare benefits, etc.
🤝 Requesting PTO is not asking the company to do you a favor. It’s notifying your employer you are utilizing part of your agreed upon deal.

⏰ Coordinating good times to take off is one thing, but repeatedly getting denied time off for no good reason is another. 👉 If this is you, try having a frank conversation with your manager. Here are some steps you can take.
1. Don’t Give Up:
Begin by asking your manager the reason behind the denial. Seek clarification, and express a genuine desire to understand their perspective 👀 Something like
✅“May I ask why it was denied?”
2. Offer a Solution:
Acknowledge the busy season and propose a solution to your manager by letting them know you’re willing to get a head start on the work now if they can tell you more about the project that will be taking up everyone’s time. ⌛️ Assure them that your absence won't impact the team or projects adversely. Here’s what that might look like
✅ “I understand that it’s a busy time. Can you elaborate on what specific projects will be on the roster during that time? I’m happy to get ahead of it now so that my time off won’t be an issue!”
3. Remain Firm but Polite:
If they still don’t budge, be firm but polite. Express your disappointment regarding their decision while reiterating your commitment to the job. 📆 Request a meeting to present a well-thought-out plan that illustrates how you'll manage your responsibilities in your absence. Say,
✅ “To be honest, I was really looking forward to having some time off to recharge and I’m very disappointed to see my request denied. I understand it’s a busy time, so I’m happy to sit down with you and show you the plan from when I’m gone so that we don’t skip a beat. Can I put some time on your calendar for later today?”
4. Collaboration and Clear Communication:
During the meeting, show your manager the comprehensive plan for managing your responsibilities while you're away. Discuss how you'll delegate tasks, complete pending work, and ensure the smooth operation of ongoing projects.
If they continue to be difficult or unreasonable, I would ⚠️ highly recommend ⚠️ looking for a new job/manager (or escalating, if appropriate)!
