How to Quit When You Have a Toxic Boss

Your emotional energy is precious ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ be careful with who you give it away to.

If anyone at work ever belittles you or tries to make you feel guilty or wrong for doing something completely normal โ€” remember: thatโ€™s a reflection of them, not you โ—๏ธ So if your toxic boss reacts poorly to you putting in your two weeks, hereโ€™s what you need to do.

Let it sliiiiiiide right off. ๐Ÿ›

No seriously. Ignore it. Quitting is something people do literally everyday. Any manager or boss who is shocked or personally offended that youโ€™re quitting has bigger issues.

Go with grace. Donโ€™t let them in. Keep your cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž

1. Maintain Emotional Detachment:

Your boss may try to gaslight you and make you feel guilty for quitting, stay composed ๐Ÿ˜ค and don't let their behavior affect you (I know easier said than done ๐Ÿ™„).

2. Avoid Reacting Emotionally:

I know you want to lash out and let them have it, but donโ€™t ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ Thatโ€™s exactly what they want from you. Avoid the temptation to get angry or retaliate ๐Ÿคฌ, they donโ€™t deserve your energyโœจ Maintain a professional front and focus on the task at handโ€”resigning in a respectful manner. Someone else in their life will let them know of the selfish jerk that they are, but it wonโ€™t be you. In fact, the most irritating thing you can do to them at this moment is to not be bothered. So donโ€™t be bothered!

3. Restate your intentions:

Instead, assure your boss that you're committed to facilitating a smooth transition ๐Ÿ’ฏ Reiterate your willingness to assist in transferring your responsibilities and reassure them that you have faith that theyโ€™ll find a replacement in no time ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Let them know youโ€™ll be handing over your resignation letter by the end of the day.

4. Prioritize Your Well-being:

Remember that your well-being is paramount. Focus on maintaining your own peace of mind and mental health. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ Besides, youโ€™re onto bigger and better things now ๐Ÿ’…๐Ÿป

And if you want, request an exit interview! ๐Ÿค” The best way to get back at them? Give mature and well articulated feedback to his boss or HR (preferably both). Then, go write an anonymous review on Glassdoor/Indeed. This is the most effective way to get them to change, and can also be cathartic for you (without putting your own career in jeopardy) ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ

Remember what I always tell you: itโ€™s not personal, itโ€™s just professional ๐Ÿ˜‰

You got this!! ๐Ÿ‘
