How to Answer “Walk Me Through Your Resume” in a Job Interview

How do you tackle one of the most common questions in a job interview: "Walk me through your resume?" 👣

Let’s start with why they’re even asking this question in the first place. As tempting as it may be to ask them to just look 👀 at your resume, don’t. This question is really just an opportunity to showcase your skills, experiences, and accomplishments. It's your chance to connect the dots and tell a compelling story about your professional journey.

Start by giving a simple overview of your background, highlighting your most relevant position or educational achievements if you’re early on in your career 🏆🎓 Be concise but informative, providing key details such as your job title, company or institution name, major, and involvement during your time there.

Next, briefly delve into the specific experiences and responsibilities you had in each role. Focus on 1-2 relevant and impactful aspects of your work, emphasizing your achievements and contributions. But more importantly, focus on the WHY. WHY did you work at that company? 🤔WHY did you get that degree? 🤔 What makes YOU unique? 🦄

Highlight the skills you picked up along the way and mention how they align with the requirements of the position you're interviewing for. Make it clear that you're not only capable but also a great fit for the role 🧩🙌🏼

Throughout your response, remember to keep it organized and structured. You can follow a chronological order, starting with your earliest experiences and progressing towards the present. Or you can adopt my preferred method: a thematic approach. With this method, you’ll group together experiences that are relevant and tailored to the job you're applying for.

Lastly, practice, practice, practice! Rehearse your response to this question beforehand, but make sure to sound natural and conversational during the actual interview. Aim for a balance between being prepared and being flexible to adapt to the flow of the conversation. ❌ They’re not looking for you to simply regurgitate what’s in front of them, but rather they want to hear a story of how you ended up there with them 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼 At the end of the day, you want to make them believe you are the perfect fit for this role!
