Asking for a Title Change at a New Job

You know that feeling when you start a new job and it’s not what you thought it would be? 😬😅 You’re suddenly flooded with work that wasn’t in your job description and you’re finding yourself taking on more senior responsibilities that don’t align with your role. What should you do then? Well you have a couple of options, but one is to ask for a title change. Here’s how to do that ✍🏼👇🏼

Like with most things in life, you need to do your research. Find out what the current job titles are within your organization and see if there are any titles that better align with your job duties and responsibilities 🧩 This will give you a better understanding of what you can realistically ask for.

Next, schedule a meeting with your boss 📆 Don't just casually mention it in the hallway or during a team meeting. Make it clear that you want to discuss the possibility of a title change and prepare to make your case 👩🏼‍💻

When you meet with your boss, come prepared with a list of your accomplishments and responsibilities that you feel warrant a change in title ✍🏼 Be specific and provide examples of how you have gone above and beyond your job duties. This will help show that you're not just asking for a title change for the sake of it, but that you've earned it ✨🌟

It's also important to emphasize how a title change can benefit the company. For example, a more accurate job title can help clients better understand your role and level of expertise. A more fitting title can also boost morale and job satisfaction, which can lead to higher productivity and retention rates 💯📈

Of course, there's always the possibility that your request for a title change may be denied. But if that's the case, don't take it personally 🚫 Instead, ask for specific feedback on what you can do to earn a title change in the future. This shows your commitment to your job and willingness to work towards your goals.

And while asking for a title change can be a nerve-wracking experience, it's an important step in advancing your career. By doing your research, coming prepared with examples of your accomplishments, and emphasizing the benefits to the company, you'll be well on your way to achieving the job title you deserve. May your new title be as amazing as you are! 🫶🏼🎉
