How to Change Your Career — ASAP!

Don’t feel like reading? Watch/listen to the full breakdown here:

Switching careers can be a daunting prospect, but it is entirely possible with some research, planning, and a willingness to take action.

In this blog post, I’ll tell you my 4-step process for how you can start transitioning into a new industry today.

STEP 1: RESEARCH

Before you start making any big changes, it's essential to research your new industry thoroughly. Make a list of the pros and cons of your current industry to understand what you want from your new career. For instance, in the tech industry, the pay and benefits are great, but job security can be low. At the same time, teaching is rewarding, but the pay may not be as high.

Once you've figured out what you want from your new career, look into different industries that align with your goals. You can use platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and others to find out what others have done to switch careers. Consider talking to people who work in your desired field to understand their experiences and gain insights into what to expect. Also, read the news to see which industries are currently in demand and strategically plan your career switch.

I also highly recommend taking a career aptitude test. Career Fitter and Truity are two of my favorites!

STEP 2: TALK TO PEOPLE

You can only do so much internet sleuthing — sometimes you just have to get out into the real world and talk to people. This will put you on a superhighway of getting to where you need to go.

Find warm connections — friends of friends, coworkers, family members, etc. and ask them about their work. They can help give you realtime,

It's also a good idea to take career aptitude tests to determine what career path suits you best. These tests can help you discover your strengths, and weaknesses, and suggest jobs you may enjoy based on your personality.

STEP 3: ARTICULATE YOUR TRANSFERABLE SKILLS

Transferrable skills are abilities and qualities that can be applied across different roles, industries, and contexts. These skills are not specific to any particular job or field but are relevant and valuable in many different situations. Transferable skills are also sometimes called "soft skills" or "portable skills."

Examples of transferrable skills include communication, problem-solving, time management, leadership, teamwork, critical thinking, adaptability, and creativity. These skills can be developed through education, work experience, volunteering, or personal hobbies and interests.

Transferrable skills are important because they can increase a person's employability and make them more adaptable to changes in the job market. They also allow individuals to transition between different roles or industries more easily and effectively.

Learn what your transferrable skills are and then practice articulating them in a job interview!

STEP 4: UPSKILL

Networking, transferrable skills, and research are only going to get you so far. If you’re up against 5 other candidates who already have relevant experience in the field, you’re going to be the odd one out. So, you have to upskill.

Upskilling refers to the process of learning new skills or enhancing existing ones to improve one's job performance and career prospects. You can upskill by gaining certifications and completing courses on websites like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, (I teach a class there!), Udemy, General Assembly, Google Certificates, etc.

Upskilling is important for both employees and employers. For employees, upskilling can lead to increased job satisfaction, higher salaries, and more career opportunities. For employers, upskilling can improve the productivity and performance of their workforce, reduce skills gaps, and enhance their competitive edge in the market.

In today's fast-changing job market, upskilling has become increasingly important to stay relevant and adaptable to new technologies and business practices.

REMEMBER:

Switching careers is entirely possible with research, planning, and the willingness to take action. With these steps in mind, you can make a successful transition to a new industry and build a fulfilling and exciting career.
